Width

Best skateboard decks width

The deck’s width is the first figure displayed on a brand new deck. When it comes to deck’s width, all skater have their personal preferences, but if you’re new to skateboarding here are few tips that you can keep in mind when choosing your newest deck.

You roughly want to match the deck’s width with your shoe size. Again, this is just a tip, you don’t have to follow our guidance, but we recommend following our suggestions if you struggle to choose your deck’s width.

Here is some useful information that will help you match your shoe size with your deck:

  • Shoe size 7 (US)/ 40 (EU)/ 6 (UK) – Deck’s width between 7.875 and 8.125 inches
  • 9 (US)/ 42.5 (EU)/ 8 (UK) – 8 and 8.375 inches
  • 10 (US)/ 44 (EU)/ 9 (UK) – 8.125 and 8.5 inches
  • 12 (US)/ 46 (EU)/ 11 (UK) – 8.375 and 8.625 inches

Another important thing to keep in mind is that you should match the deck’s width with your truck’s size (if you already have a pair of trucks). It’s very important because it will ease your learning process, especially with tricks. When your deck’s width doesn’t match your truck’s size, it will make your board flip differently (faster or slower).

Here are the characteristics of different deck’s widths:

Large decks are good for speed and stability since their trucks are also wider. Also, they offer a larger landing surface for your landings. On the downside, large heavy decks make tricks look slower than on light decks.

In fact, a large deck will require more force from its skater to make it flip.

Thinner boards are lighter and are easier to flip, but they offer less stability at high speeds, and their smaller landing surface will make it harder to land tricks.

Length

The deck’s length depends on the skater’s height. To help you understand how to match these two figures we summarized all the information you need here below:

  • Body height <140 cm – length between 28 and 30.5 inches
  • <150 cm – length between 30.5 and 31.5 inches
  • 150 – 175 cm –  31.5 – 31.875 inches
  • 160 – 185 cm – 31.75 – 32 inches
  • 170 – 195 cm – 31.875 – 32.25 inches
  • 180 – 210 cm – 32 – 32.5 inches
  • >190 cm – over 32.5 inches

Keep in mind that shorter boards will make horizontal rotations feel easier than longer boards. Of course, if you have enough strength, you will be perfectly able to do horizontal rotations. Moreover, you will have more room to land the board.

Shapes & Materials

Most decks are built and assembled in the same way; 7 layers (more or less) of maple compressed and glued together to offer flex and resistance.

For the heavier skaters, some decks include a thin layer of carbon fiber on the weak spots of the board to increase resistance.

We will split decks into 2 main shapes:

Standard shapes:

Best skateboard decks normal shape

A standard shaped deck has a rounded tail and a rounded nose. This particularity is perfect for skaters enjoying tricks and skateparks. In fact, when doing tricks, the skater will often land tricks with the nose or tail facing the wrong direction. Therefore, having a normal shaped board is essential for these types of skaters.

If you are new to skateboarding, we strongly recommend you start learning on a normal shaped deck. It will be easier for learning the basics of skateboarding. In addition, because the majority of skaters ride normal shaped deck, you’ll have more chance of receiving learning tips from other skaters.

Other shapes:

Best skateboard decks other shape

Everything that doesn’t have a rounded tail and nose, we consider it as “other shapes”. Decks in this category are generally characterized by a square tail and a pointy noise, making them look a lot like old school boards.

As you can imagine, doing “standard tricks” on this board is much harder. Not only you can land a trick with you tail facing forward but the overall handling of the board is different. Learning skateboarding with this types of boards isn’t the easiest thing but think of when you’ll switch to a normal shaped deck… You will need a huge adaption time to land the same tricks and to learn new ones. In fact, the tricks vary a lot according to board’s shapes.

To conclude, only a few skaters ride these types of board. Unless one of your best friends has one and can teach you the basic, we recommend going for a standard shaped deck.

When should you change deck?

Wrong size

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced skater, you might be skating with the wrong board. For instance, do you ever land tricks more consistently using a friend’s board during S.K.A.T.E? Do you often make sketchy landings? If the answer to these question is yes, you might consider trying other sizes to see if you feel any difference.

Again, this is only a tip to help you have a better skating experience. In the end, it’s about personal preference, especially if you’ve been riding for many years.

Usage

If you’ve been shredding your board every day for the past year, your board’s tail and nose might have weird looking shapes by now. Even worse, your board might have cracks that weakened your deck.

Riding under the rain and storing your board in humid places can affect the quality of your deck. The wood starts absorbing all the humidity and the properties of your board start to change. When skaters say a board lost its pop, they’re referring to that. The rebound of the wood slowly loses its properties when the board absorbs too much humidity.

Don’t get me wrong, the deck’s pop won’t make you ollie 7 boards, it can surely help, but it just refers to the state of the wood.

A practical way to know if your board lost its pop, other than from riding it, is to grab the board with your hands and tap the tail on the ground. If it sounds sharp, it means the pop is still there, if it sounds heavy it implies the pop is gone.

You can still ride your skateboard easily, but if your goal is to learn tricks rapidly, a new deck will probably help you achieve it.
