Before buying an electric longboard you should get informed about what makes a good electric longboard or skateboard. It’s important that you understand how to calculate the capacity and the power.

Battery

The battery is among the most critical parts of your longboard, it delivers and stocks the power to make the wheels spin. Watts are used for comparing electric longboards battery’s.

The power of a battery is described in Watts. When you multiply the battery’s voltage per the battery’s amps, you get Watts. Voltage is an essential factor to keep in mind when comparing batteries. A high voltage battery will offer better performance than a low voltage battery.

The perfect scenario is an electric longboard with low power consumption (Watts), this doesn’t mean that it should never use the full power of the battery. It says that the battery delivers the power when needed. The battery should power when going at constant speeds and provide power going uphill or at high speeds.

High voltage batteries are better because they allow the rider to manage the speed and the range of the board better. Low voltage batteries have to deliver the maximum power capacity to reach constant speeds, and they will overheat during uphills (of course this also depends on your weight).

They’re 2 types of batteries:

  • Lithium Polymer batteries:

Lithium Polymer batteries are the most common batteries found in hobby products such as remote control cars and drones. The Lithium Polymer batteries offer an excellent power to weight ratio at an affordable price.

  • Lithium-Ion batteries:

You might have used Lithium-Ion batteries already. There are different types of Lithium-Ion batteries, most of them are for high-performance drillers for example. These batteries offer better safety and more performance. Moreover, they have a higher life expectancy regarding charging hours. Of course, all this performance and life expectancy comes at a higher price.

Or is it?

When you compare the cost per charge ratio, Lithium-Ion batteries become cheaper than the Lithium-Polymer. It depends on how you want to see it.

Range

Watt Hours often describe the range of the batteries, which are equal to the voltage times the battery’s capacity.

Without making it complicated, here is what you should expect from a descend electric longboard;

An electric longboard should use more or less 10 Watt Hours per kilometer, anything less than that we consider it as a low capacity battery.

Keep in mind that the figure could vary slightly according to your weight and if you are doing a lot of uphills.

Battery Management System (BMS)

A Battery Management System is an electric component that manages and controls the battery. A BMS is usually always built to pair a specific battery; their role is to increase the battery’s safety and life expectancy.

For instance, BMS can offer temperature management and even shut down features if the battery is overheating. Battery overheating can occur when emptying the battery too rapidly.

Most Lithium-Ion batteries feature Battery Management Systems; you rarely see BMS in standard Lithium-Polymer batteries.

Electronic Speed Control (ESC)

The Electronic Speed Control is the brain of your electric longboard, it links all the parts together and is a crucial part of the electric ecosystem of the board.

When you press the trigger to accelerate, the ESC takes power from the battery and delivers it to the motors and wheels; it primarily manages the functioning of the electric longboard.

There are different types of ESC quality, the ESC that you find in a small electrical remote car is not made to carry human weights.

What you have to look for is an advanced ESC that can manage all kinds of scenarios; how much power to deliver? How to deliver it? Manage the temperature, etc.

Single and Dual motors

The advantage of dual motors is that they deliver the power to both rear and front truck, preventing the board from torque steer. The power is linear, and it increases the overall torque.

You should seriously think of buying a dual motor longboard if you are more than 80 kg and are planning to do uphills.

Also, the wheels sizes can affect the torque of your electric longboard. Big size wheels increase top speeds but reduce the torque. If your longboard needs extra torque, consider buying slightly smaller wheels.

When it comes to speed or torque, it’s a question of personal preference, but we would recommend a balanced setup. The top seed of 20 mph (32 km/h) is way enough to cruise in the middle of cars and pedestrians. With a top speed of 20 mph, you should have a ton of torque to go uphill.

Performance:

The battery takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to charge, if you get the extended range battery, that one will take 1 hour and 45 minutes to charge fully.

A useful feature is the riding modes switch (from beginner to expert) allowing you to get progressively comfortable. The Boosted Dual offers 4 riding modes:

The Boosted Board will resist the rain even though we don’t recommend riding it under the heavy rain. The motors and battery might not break but, the trucks and other components might rust and affect the functioning of the board in the long run.

On top of that, the rain removes the grip chemical from the wheels making the handling of the board very difficult, especially when braking.

Its shape is different though; it’s more concave in the center which makes it more oval than the Boosted Board.

The Inboard M1 has Lithium-Ion battery that provides 43.2 volts and 97 Watt Hours. It’s fully charged in 1 hour and 30 minutes and will offer a range of 7 miles (more or less 2 miles depending on weight, speed, and ground).

The board also features a Battery Management System (BMS) and an Electronic Speed Control (ESC).

Talking about speed, the M1 will reach a top speed of 22 mph (35 km/h). Also, you can manage it with 3 different riding modes:

  1. Beginner: Top speed 5 mph (8 km/h)
  2. Intermediate: Top speed 14 mph (22 km/h)
  3. Advanced: Top 22 mph (35 km/h)

It will provide good uphill performance until an 18% hill grade, after that the performance will be affected.

But let’s get to the exciting features:

Inboard features a swappable battery that increases the initial range of the board drastically. You can access the battery very quickly, its located on top of the board and is swappable in only a few seconds.

It also features front and backlights locates inside the deck. They make you more visible at night time and increase the overall safety.

A little downside of the Inboard M1 is the braking and the overall smoothness when switching from going frontwards to backward. The braking is decent, but you have to get used to the way it stops.

The deck’s wood components make the board pretty stiff and very light. In fact, it only weighs 13.9 pounds (6 kg). The kicktail shapes provide another style of ride and enable riders to tilt the front end over small obstacles.

Performance:

The E-GO2 features a 400 Watts battery with a complete electronic ecosystem composed of a Battery Management System and Electric Speed Control. The trade-off is that the battery powers only a single motor and that it has 3 to 5 hours charging time. On the other hand, it offers an 18 miles (30 Km) range, it’s remarkable! But it will only provide a top speed of 12 mph (14 km/h)

The E-GO2 offer 2 riding modes:

  1. Eco: Low acceleration curve and limited top speed

The E-GO2 is the electric longboard everyone could use, with its long range and low top speed. It will offer constant performance during uphills provided that the hill doesn’t exceed 10% gradience.

The board handles bumps and gravels pretty well and is resistant to bad weather. We won’t recommend riding it under heavy rain, but it can handle splashes or snow. On the downside, you have to get used to the slow responsiveness of the remote control and the overall smoothness when switching from riding forward to backward.
