Buying guide – Bodyboards

What are you buying it for?

It’s important to think about what you want to do with your new bodyboard; you want to mess around in the waves and have fun? Or you actually want to learn the sport?

Best bodyboards different levels

If you’re simply looking to have fun on the beach, the best choice would be a 30 or 40 dollar bodyboard. You don’t even have to bother about size and shape. Grab an affordable bodyboard with a design that you like and bring it to the beach with your friends or family. You can go straight to our best bodyboards table above, check the lowest prices and pick your favorite bodyboard!

However, if you’re looking to evolve in the sport, keep on reading this buying guide as you will need to consider shapes, sizes, and other small parameters. Moreover, you are probably going to need some bodyboard fins as well.

Why is length important?

Having a bodyboard that suits you allows you to control your board better and get more speed and response.

In fact, a bodyboard that’s too long is hard to push on the water; you have to provide more effort when you paddle. Also, it’s harder to control, and it makes you slower.

Whereas, a bodyboard that’s too short doesn’t float as well; the surface of the board isn’t big enough to support your weight and make you float. The ending result is less fun in the waves!

Best bodyboards length

So what’s the good length for you?

The perfect length is more or less the length of your legs, meaning from your feet to somewhere in between your hips and your bellybutton (keeping the legs straight of course).

Why is width important?

Best bodyboards width

The width determines how much the bodyboard floats. For instance, if you’re a heavy person and need more floatation, pick a wide board. Conversely, if you’re a light person choose a narrower board.

Besides, you could look for more or less floatation according to the waves you want to ride. If the sea is calm with small waves, you probably want to have more floatation to relax on the water. Whereas, if there are big waves, you probably want less floatation to reach higher speeds on the waves.

A mistake is buying a longer board for more floatation! Remember, a bodyboard that’s too long is slow and hard to control.

The width of a bodyboard also determines the width of the “wide point” (the widest section of the board).

Bodyboards with centered wide points are the most polyvalent ones; they’re perfect for any waves. On the other hand, bodyboards with high wide points (between the center and the nose) provide more directional control to the rider (perfect for big and steep waves).

Thickness

Choosing the thickness of your bodyboard is another way of adjusting the board to your style or level. Thick boards tend to float better than thin boards, but they’re harder to control. On the other hand, thin boards float less but are easy to maneuver.

Different rails

Best bodyboards the rails

The rails are the 2 sections on the edges of a bodyboard. The one below is called rail and the part on top is called the chine.

There are different types of rails setup, on the picture above you can see 2 possible types; 50/50 or 60/40. What these figures mean is that the rail and chine have the same length (50/50), or that the rail is bigger than the chine (60/40).

What should you know?

Long rails offer more control and less speed. Whereas, a short rail offers less control and more speed. It’s up to you to pick a setup that suits your style. A very versatile setup that we recommend is a 55/45; it offers good speed without compromising the control of the board.

The different cores available

The materials used to build a bodyboard determine its “flex” or ability to bend. Flex is very important; it enables the rider to bend the board for steering. In fact, a bodyboard should be flat; it’s the rider who bends the board with his arms to steer it across the wave. Moreover, the flex determines how much recoil a board has. Recoil is necessary for bodyboards; it helps the rider to get extra speed on the wave.

Check out below the different materials used for bodyboards’ core:

  • Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

EPS is the most affordable material for bodyboards; it’s less strong and resistant than the other materials. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a lot of fun on them!

  • Polyethylene (PE)

PE is slightly more expensive than EPS, it’s also more flexible and has more recoil meaning it will accelerate in the wave when it’s bent. In general, PE is also more resistant and durable than EPS.

  • Polypropylene (PP)

PP is the most expensive material for building bodyboards’ cores. It’s very resistant and extremely stiff, this is why it’s better to ride PP bodyboards in warm places (temperature impacts the board’s flex; the warmer the temperature, the more flexible the board will become).
